Abstract

This book delves into the complexities of prison management, with a special focus on the transformative role of work in prison establishments in the Southern Region of Rio Grande do Sul. This work aims to be a valuable contribution to understanding the challenges and opportunities inherent to prison administration , highlighting work as a strategic management tool.
We begin our journey exploring the role of work in prisons as a central component in prison management. The chapter: Work in Prisons, offers a detailed analysis of employment practices in prisons, examining how work can be used as a tool to promote resocialization, reduce recidivism and improve the living conditions of inmates.
Chapter II: The Theory of Resources and Capabilities. This chapter expands our analysis to incorporate the theory of resources and capabilities. We will address how available resources, both material and human, can be efficiently managed to promote more effective prison management. This theoretical perspective will provide insights into how to optimize existing resources to achieve rehabilitation and safety goals.
Chapter III: From Bureaucratic Public Administration to Managerial Public Administration. This chapter traces the evolution of public administration, highlighting the transition from a bureaucratic to a managerial approach. We will investigate how this paradigm shift can be applied to prison establishments, improving efficiency, transparency and responsibility in the management of the prison system.
We conclude our analysis with a deep dive into the concept of prison labor itself, from "On Prison Labor". This chapter examines the different forms of work available in prisons, assessing their impact on the resocialization of inmates, the security of the facilities and preparation for reintegration into society.
This book is a search for an in-depth understanding of the dynamics surrounding prison management, highlighting work as an essential strategic tool. We believe that the reflections presented throughout these chapters can contribute to an enriching dialogue between professionals, academics and managers interested in promoting more efficient and humanized prison management.
