DEATHS OF WOMEN OF FERTILE AGE RELATED TO PREGNANCY, BIRTH AND/OR PUERPERIUM IN THE STATE OF PARANÁ BETWEEN 2016 AND 2020

Despite many efforts at state, local and national levels over the past few years, a national consensus on how best to identify, review and prevent maternal deaths remains a challenge. The objective of the present study was to carry out an epidemiological survey of deaths related to pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period reported in the state of Paraná. Ecological, time series, quantitative and descriptive study based on DATASUS between 2016 and 2020. The following variables were collected: ethnicity, age group, place of death, education level, macro-region of the state and cause according to ICD (O00 – O99). Between 2016 and 2020, 378 deaths were recorded, with 2020 being the year with the highest number of cases (84) and 2017 the lowest (57), the temporal variation in the state was +1.2% with a mortality rate of 3.67 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants. The victims' ages ranged from 10 to 49 years old. Being more prevalent between 30 and 39 (40.8%) followed by 20 to 29 (40.4%). Regarding ethnicity, 64.8% of deaths occurred in white women, followed by brown women (22.2%). Disease aggravated during childbirth was the most prevalent cause (20.25%) of maternal deaths, followed by deaths after the puerperium (13.5%), third (8.2%) was gestational hypertension with significant proteinuria.
