Abstract

This article explores the relationship between breastfeeding and Early Childhood Caries (ECC) and addresses a recurring question: can breastfeeding lead to dental caries in early childhood? This topic has been the subject of extensive research and debate within the field of dentistry. ECC refers to dental caries in children under the age of 6. Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life is highly recommended and does not significantly increase the risk of ECC. Breast milk offers protective benefits against ECC due to its balanced composition, presence of antibodies, and stimulation of saliva production. The practice of breastfeeding on demand and proper oral hygiene are crucial for maintaining the oral health of infants during breastfeeding. However, it is always advisable to seek personalized guidance from healthcare professionals, such as pediatricians or pediatric dentists, regarding breastfeeding and your child’s oral health. This research aims to identify components of breast milk, provide insights into dental caries, and discuss potential preventive measures. The methodology is based on a literature review using databases such as SCIELO, PUBMED, and GOOGLE SCHOLAR. The studies conclude that there is no scientific evidence to support breastfeeding as the primary factor leading to Early Childhood Caries, considering that dental caries is a multifactorial condition and highly dependent on sugar-containing biofilms.
