Abstract

This work aims to report the experience on the benefits of strength training for the elderly and its positive impact on quality of life. It is characterized as an experience report with a qualitative approach of an academic experience in one of the pillars of university education whose main characteristic is the description of the intervention. During the training period, the elderly participants underwent Strength Training exercise sessions, focusing on strengthening muscle groups important for mobility and autonomy. The results revealed several positive points. Firstly, there was an increase in muscle strength, flexibility, balance, making daily tasks easier. Strength training also had positive effects on body composition, with a reduction in body fat and an increase in lean mass. The elderly reported a positive psychological impact, increased energy to carry out daily and leisure activities with less difficulty, emotional well-being, decreasing levels of anxiety and depression, improved sleep quality, reduction in joint and muscle pain, improved posture and balance are beneficial for preventing falls, a common concern in older adults, reported greater self-esteem and self-confidence as they achieved their fitness goals. It is concluded that this experience report highlights the importance of strength training as an effective strategy to improve the quality of life of the elderly. Promoting a more active life, physical, independence, emotional and social aspects, demonstrating that investment in muscle strengthening can be a valuable approach to promoting aging with healthy longevity and general well-being.
