Abstract

Over the centuries, the evolution of the medical field has brought a new perspective on surgical procedures as they are performed now to the detriment of how they were done in the past. Failures regarding the hygiene of the surgical site and the lack of anesthesia meant that the pain felt by the patient generated absurd trauma and the acquired infections often resulted in death. Thus, several techniques were increasingly enhanced until the current approach was reached, considerably reducing the mortality of patients undergoing surgical procedures. Knowing that the practice of applying local anesthetics in medicine is routine, understanding the possible adverse signs presented by the patient is of utmost importance, considering that such practice can prevent irreversible damage to the human body through immediate therapeutic intervention. Therefore, this narrative literature review brought together articles from the PUBMED database with the aim of identifying the main indicators of poisoning by local anesthetics. It was concluded that the main indicators of poisoning by local anesthetics involve the cardiovascular system and the central nervous system. It is noteworthy that neurotoxicity precedes cardiotoxicity, making rapid recognition of neurotoxic signs essential to manage the patient's condition.
