Syphilis is a curable and exclusive Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) of humans, caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum and transmitted by sexual intercourse without a condom with an infected person, or via maternal-fetal transmission. The vertical transmission of syphilis remains a major public health problem in Brazil, being a marker of quality, since its transplacental transmission could be effectively reduced if prenatal care was carried out satisfactorily. Access to Primary Care, as well as early diagnosis and treatment of the pregnant woman and her partner are crucial measures to ensure a reduction in the vertical transmission of syphilis. This article sought to review, through current literature, the perspectives, mainly on the early capture of pregnant women in the first trimester and correct gestational monitoring throughout prenatal care as essential measures for controlling the disease syphilis during pregnancy and its congenital form.
