SUSTAINABILITY IN HOSPITAL PHARMACIES: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF PRACTICES ADOPTED IN WASTE AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

The hospital pharmacy plays a key role within a hospital, being responsible for storing, dispensing and distributing medications to patients. However, it is important to emphasize that this activity can also have negative impacts on the environment, such as the generation of hazardous waste and the excessive use of natural resources. Given this context, sustainability has become an increasingly present theme in hospital management, including in hospital pharmacy management. The objective of the study is to analyze the sustainable practices adopted by hospital pharmacies and how they contribute to environmental, economic and social sustainability, between 2019 and 2023, knowing the interventions and benefits adopted, to characterize and discuss the productions on the subject. A search was carried out in the Science Direct and Web of Science databases, using the descriptors "Hospital Pharmacy", "Solid Waste Management in Health" and "Sustainability" with translations into Portuguese and English. Articles available in free access for download were included. Through the bibliographic survey, 86 studies were identified, which after the selection process resulted in 9 studies included for the review. Studies have shown that technology is important to improve communication and collaboration between hospital and community pharmacists, contributing to patient safety and treatment effectiveness. In this way, the implementation of sustainable technologies in the health area, such as the proper segregation of waste and reduction in the use of resources.
