Abstract

Introduction: As osteoporosis becomes more prevalent and falls among the elderly become more common, femoral fractures emerge as one of the most prominent traumatic injuries and a leading cause of hospitalization in this group. Objective: To perform a clinical-epidemiological comparison of femoral fracture cases in the elderly in Cascavel, Paraná, from 2012 to 2022. Methodology: This is an ecological study using data obtained from the Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificações. Results and Discussion: There were 1,783 cases of femoral fracture in the elderly in the city of Cascavel, Paraná. There was a predominance of females (n = 1,171; 65.6%), individuals of white ethnicity, and those aged 80 years or older. The total expenditure by healthcare systems was R$ 5,210,638.32, with an average cost per AIH of R$ 2,922.40. The average length of hospital stay was 5.6 days, with 75 deaths recorded during the period, and a higher mortality rate among men aged 80 years or older. Conclusions: The data underscore the importance of policies for fall prevention in the elderly, early osteoporosis diagnosis, and appropriate treatments to reduce the incidence of femoral fractures and improve the quality of life for this population.
