INTRODUCTION: The first successful facial transplant occurred in 2005, and since then, progress has been made in the field to improve the quality of life of patients through the achieved psychosocial impact of the procedure. In this context, the objective of this literature review is to analyze the impacts that facial transplantation has on the lives of recipients. METHODOLOGY: This study is a literature review that seeks to understand the psychosocial impact of facial transplantation. Using databases such as PubMed and Scielo, articles addressing the effects of facial transplantation on patients' quality of life were selected. After analyzing the studies, 11 relevant articles were found. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Based on the works, it is of utmost importance to have a psychological evaluation of patients since the procedure significantly affects their perception of themselves and their social interaction. Pre and post-operative follow-up is essential due to the psychological challenges and lifestyle changes that may occur. After the transplant, an improvement in social reintegration, psychological aspects, and quality of life of patients can be observed. Furthermore, improvements in physical health, such as swallowing, breathing, verbal communication, and facial sensitivity, have been identified. CONCLUSION: It can be concluded that facial transplantation has a significant psychosocial impact on patients' lives. Careful evaluation and continuous follow-up are essential. Additionally, informing patients about the risks and adopting a more comprehensive approach are crucial. However, further studies are needed to understand the long-term impact.
