Over several generations, women who chose to follow the path of a surgical career in Brazil faced significant historical obstacles. Although we have seen a gradual increase in the number of women in the medical field over the years, their representation in surgical specialties still remains low. This disparity is attributed to a number of factors, including a lack of confidence, a dearth of successful female role models, a lack of adequate institutional support for female physicians who are mothers, and ingrained social and cultural pressures. Therefore, it is extremely important to recognize these challenges and face them proactively in our daily lives. Despite the obstacles, it is crucial to understand that women have extraordinary potential to excel in surgery. We must encourage them to pursue their professional aspirations, challenging gender stereotypes and overcoming any prejudices that may come their way. Diversity in medicine is essential for a more inclusive and comprehensive healthcare system.
