One of the greatest achievements of Brazilian society was the creation of the Unified Health System, which follows the principles of universality, equity and integrality and has been part of national legislation since the 1990s. From this perspective, the following work is an integrative literature review and aims to analyze the advances and challenges linked to the history of the SUS. In view of this, a bibliographic survey of studies published between the years 2018 to 2022 was carried out, which were written in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. For the construction of the review, based on the Health Science Descriptors - DeCS, the terms were used: "Health Systems and History and SUS", which culminated in 387 articles found in the databases: Índice Bibliográfico Español en Ciencias de la Salud (IBECS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online (MEDLINE) and In Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS). Therefore, the findings show that some factors such as social participation and the struggle for social rights were fundamental for the consolidation of the SUS; in parallel, underfunding and inadequate resource management present themselves as obstacles to the effectiveness of the aforementioned System.
