ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE: STUDY OF MORTALITY IN THE MACROREGIONS OF THE STATE OF PARANÁ, 2015-2022

Abstract

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a globally impactful neurodegenerative condition characterized by cognitive decline, memory loss, and functional dependency. It is the leading cause of dementia in the elderly, affecting millions of people. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between AD and mortality in the health macroregions of Paraná over an eight-year period. Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate trends in hospitalizations, deaths, and mortality rates related to AD from 2015 to 2022 in Paraná, focusing on the health macroregions. Method: The study was conducted based on secondary data from DATASUS, encompassing patients over 50 years old diagnosed with AD who progressed to death in Paraná. The analysis period spanned from January 2015 to December 2022. Analysis and Discussion of Results: The results revealed an increase in hospitalizations and deaths related to AD over the years, with the "East" macroregion presenting the highest numbers. This trend can be attributed to the aging population and improvements in diagnosis. The complex association between AD and mortality requires further investigation. Regional disparities highlight the need for public health approaches adapted to each context. Final Considerations: This study emphasizes the importance of effective prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment strategies to address the growing impact of AD. Increasing rates of morbidity and mortality from AD in the elderly pose a challenge to healthcare systems. Investments in research and resources are needed to effectively combat this disease and improve the quality of life of affected individuals.
