Femur fractures in the elderly (people aged 60 years or older) represent a considerable number of hospital admissions in Brazil, and are responsible for high rates of morbidity and mortality. The state of Paraná is the 5th Brazilian state in absolute number of elderly people. Thus, an attempt was made to carry out an epidemiological analysis of femoral fractures in the elderly in that state, in addition to comparing it with the total values for Brazil. Descriptions were made based on data obtained from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH-SUS). There were no significant differences between the analyzed years, but the number of cases is high and it can be concluded that there is an increased incidence in the elderly aged 80 years or more and a conformity between the state values in relation to the averages that cover the entire national territory. It is concluded, therefore, that Brazilian elderly people lack actions that prevent falls and raise awareness about this injury. Thus, public policies aimed at controlling risk factors and educating the population on the subject are fundamental.
