Abstract

Breastfeeding is recognized as a fundamental pillar in health promotion and disease prevention in infants. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the influence of breastfeeding on disease prevention in children during the first months and years of life. The objective is to explore the scientific evidence that demonstrates the benefits of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of children, addressing different aspects of disease prevention. The bibliographic review was carried out based on scientific studies published in journals, systematic reviews and guidelines from recognized health organizations. Studies were selected that address the effects of breastfeeding on the reduction of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections and allergies, as well as on the promotion of children's immune health and neurocognitive development. The results highlight that breastfeeding is associated with a significant reduction in the risk of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections and allergies in infants. In addition, breastfeeding contributes to the development of a healthy immune system, promoting protection against infectious diseases. Scientific evidence also indicates that breastfeeding is related to better neurocognitive health outcomes and reduced risks of chronic diseases in later life. The analysis highlights the importance of breastfeeding as an effective strategy for preventing illnesses in infants, in addition to highlighting the need for health policies that promote, protect and support breastfeeding as a public health practice. Understanding the multiple benefits of breastfeeding strengthens the importance of this method in promoting the health and well-being of children from the first days of life. In conclusion, breastfeeding plays a crucial role in preventing illness in infants, providing a solid foundation for the healthy and successful development of children. Raising awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and providing appropriate support for mothers are key to ensuring the health and future of future generations.
