Society's movement towards sustainability has significantly impacted the roofing industry. The intent of the sustainability movement is to encourage the use and development of eco-friendly options. In the area of roofing, this is achieved by installing products that provide long-term service with low-cost service and renewability options. As regulation increases, manufacturers are turning more to products with a “green” focus. These products are durable, environmentally friendly and cost-effective. This article analyzes the evidence on green roofs and their importance in a sustainable context. The potential for improving green roof function is emphasized by understanding the interactions between its ecosystem elements, especially the relationships between growing media, soil biota, and vegetation, and the interactions between community structure and ecosystem functioning. Additional research on green roof technology should evaluate the effectiveness of green roofs compared to other technologies with similar purposes and ultimately focus on estimates of aggregate benefits at landscape scales and more holistic cost-benefit analyses. The research methodology was carried out by collecting data from experimental models related to the proposed theme.
