This article brings an approach to the development of teaching literature in High School, which is not placed as a curricular component of visibility in relation to other components. It is common to find students who do not show interest in reading and knowing facts that involve past times, facts that are linked to the teaching of literature, that mention other areas of knowledge such as religion, history, philosophy, art, etc. Every student needs to absorb knowledge to stay informed with concepts that will be essential for their school trajectory. All content adds knowledge, and in this way the student learns to reflect and develops a critical sense. The teaching of literature is not much appreciated by the student, as it is necessary to read texts and literary works from the past and which is not interesting for him. It is also necessary to know some authors who stood out in past and present times. The teacher seeks means and strategies so that the teaching of literature is seen as essential for the student's life, since there is little interest in studying literature. For the teaching of literature to give a satisfactory result, it is necessary to make changes in the strategies carried out during the classes. It is common to find texts in textbooks that are used as an excuse to work on reading, as the activities do not inspire interest in students. Reading to be interesting must be focused on the students' reality, themes that involve the present, that make them reflect, and thus realize the importance of having knowledge about certain subjects. According to the new perspectives for secondary education, the teaching of literature continues to be linked to the teaching of the Portuguese language, but it is necessary to provide conditions for students so that they feel like reading, as the concept of literature rooted for years must be modified so that students no longer see the act of reading as something bad, a waste of time, boring, sleepy, etc. Thus, the training of readers will be effective with a high critical sense and aware of their role in society.
