Abstract

: Introduction: The topic of patient safety is being discussed more and more in the health area every day due to the various risks during procedures. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), patient safety can be defined as the reduction of unnecessary risks during health care. Objective: to analyze adverse events related to patient safety in the surgical center. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review, carried out in the following databases: MEDLINE, LILACS, due to the credibility, variety and ease of finding articles in Portuguese and available in full for online access, from the use of the Descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS): “patient safety”, “adverse event” and “surgical center”, crossing with the Boolean AND operator. Results and Discussion: Among these events, one of the most cited is the error in the medication process, with the change of medication being the most frequent error, which can happen during administration, prescription or dispensing. In addition, infections acquired in the hospital are also a frequent event, as well as incidents related to surgery such as the presence of a foreign body, broken instrument in the patient, intervention in the wrong patient and incorrect surgical site. Major problems can also occur such as bleeding and adverse events related to fluid control and venous thromboembolic events. Final considerations: This study enabled a survey of the main adverse events that occur in surgical centers. As one of the main adverse events occurring in a surgical clinic. It was observed, in addition to the most recurrent types, possible causes for which these events happen, being a point of reflection for the practice of the health team. Taking these aspects into account, the improvement of care will only occur with effective communication and following the guidelines and protocols correctly, with the aim of mitigating possible adverse events.
