ACTION OF THE PHARMACIST IN SELF-MEDICATION IN ELDERLY PEOPLE REGARDING THE IRRATIONAL USE OF NON-STEROID ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DRUGS

Self-medication is the use of medication without prescription, guidance or monitoring by a qualified professional, such as doctors and pharmacists. This practice has increased considerably, especially among the elderly population. However, this practice can mask diseases, cause intoxication or even lead to death. The general objective of this work is to address pharmaceutical care in self-medication with anti-inflammatories. The specific objective is to identify the risks and benefits caused by the practice of using NSAIDs, report the importance of pharmaceutical care in the use of NSAIDs and talk about self-medication with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and promote health education on the rational use of drugs at elderly population. This work was carried out through a literature review, through research of scientific articles, electronic journals, books, monographs, and legislation that address the role of the pharmacist in self-medication in the elderly using anti-inflammatory drugs. The time frame was 5 years, that is, from 2019 to 2023, and in Portuguese.
