Pneumoperitoneum is a medical condition in which there is air in the peritoneal cavity, which is the region surrounding the abdominal organs. This condition can be caused by several pathologies, such as gastrointestinal perforations, intestinal ischemia, mesenteric cysts and complications of colonoscopies. The main symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and bloating. Diagnosis is usually made by means of computed tomography or ultrasonography. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, but usually involves surgical intervention to repair the perforation or remove the mesenteric cyst. Prognosis can be good if diagnosis is made early and appropriate treatment is started immediately. However, the presence of complications such as peritonitis can increase mortality. Pneumoperitoneum is a rare medical condition, but it is important to be aware of its symptoms and causes to ensure early diagnosis and treatment and improve the patient's prognosis.
