USE OF SUCUPIRA OIL IN THERAPY

Abstract

The present article sought to discuss the use of Sucupira oil in therapy, the species Bowdichia major Mart, popularly known as sucupira preta, or also as sucupira-do-cerrado. Therefore, a descriptive research was carried out through the search in databases of scientific articles, theses, dissertations, legislation and books. In this sense, the literature pointed out that sucupira oil, even though it is a natural product, if administered in large amounts, can be toxic. According to theorists, consumption of sucupira products is not recommended for people with liver or kidney problems, pregnant and lactating women and children. This plant is popularly used to treat inflammatory processes, it is scientifically proven to have analgesic activity, its medicinal properties help relieve pain and inflammation, and it is also widely used as an anti-rheumatic, analgesic, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, in the form of tea, capsules, extract and oil. However, the result related to sucupira oil consecrated it as a home remedy, since sucupira still does not constitute an approved herbal medicine and authorized for commercialization. Therefore, Bowdichia major Mart, the black sucupira, despite having a high potential, is currently marketed in products based on its seeds and/or products at fairs or pharmacies.
