THE ROLE OF PSYCHOLOGIST IN CONFUSIONAL STATES: INTERVENTIONS BASED ON PSYCHOLOGICAL FIRST AID AND INTERDISCIPLINARY MANAGEMENT IN THE ELDERLY

Abstract

Delirium in older adults, due to its sudden onset and the severity of its impact, can increase the risk of mortality and cognitive alterations, becoming a significant challenge in clinical practice. This essay examines the psychologist’s role in managing these impacts, focusing on interventions aligned with the routines of Psychological First Aid (PFA) and on the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Based on a narrative literature review, this study highlights the limitations of pharmacological management, further emphasizing the relevance of a humanized care plan grounded in authors such as Kitwood and Winnicott, who understand the older adult as a subject of history, affection, and relational bonds. PFA strengthens interaction with the healthcare team and supports the older adult’s family by identifying specific needs that guide immediate and compassionate intervention, reducing emotional distress and discomfort. The findings indicate that the psychologist’s involvement contributes to a safer interactive environment, adding sensitivity, ethics, and integration to care practices. This fosters a more welcoming relational atmosphere and builds a foundation for emotional and educational support in healthcare. It is observed that the psychologist’s role, structured and aligned with interdisciplinary practice, is highly relevant for more humanized management of confusional states across different care contexts for older adults. This role also encourages further advancements regarding the need for specific protocols and future research on the topic.
