PROFILE OF PATIENTS ATTENDED FOR TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDERS ASSOCIATED WITH BRUXISM IN JUAZEIRO, BAHIA

Abstract

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and bruxism represent highly relevant conditions in public health due to their high prevalence and negative impact on individuals' quality of life. These disorders affect the temporomandibular joint and masticatory muscles and are frequently associated with physical and psychosocial factors such as stress and anxiety. This study aims to present the profile of patients with Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) associated with bruxism, considering gender and age group, in the municipality of Juazeiro-BA, Brazil. This is a cross-sectional, retrospective study based on the analysis of administrative records from the Center for Dental Specialties (CEO) for the years 2023 and 2024. Data were collected considering the variables: age, sex, and year of care. The results indicated a predominance of consultations among women and individuals aged between 26 and 50 years. Additionally, a 27.38% increase was observed in the average number of consultations in 2024 compared to the previous year. It is concluded, based on the epidemiological data obtained, that the municipality of Juazeiro follows the trend observed in national and international studies, which point to a higher prevalence of TMD and bruxism among adult women of working age. Understanding the profile of patients treated at the Center for Dental Specialties can significantly contribute to improving strategies for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of TMD and bruxism at the municipal level, as well as supporting public policies related to oral health and encouraging the development of further studies on the subject.
