PROFILE OF PATIENTS WITH CLEFT LIP AND PALATE TREATED AT A DENTAL INSTITUTE IN THE SÃO FRANCISCO VALLEY, BRAZIL

Abstract

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) are among the most common craniofacial anomalies, potentially affecting feeding, speech, and socialization in affected individuals. The treatment of these conditions requires not only corrective surgery but also a multidisciplinary approach. This study aims to describe the profile of patients with cleft lip and palate treated between 2019 and 2024 at a philanthropic dental institute in Petrolina, Pernambuco, Brazil. To achieve this, a cross-sectional study was conducted based on the retrospective review of administrative and epidemiological reports from the institute, collecting demographic data such as age, gender, and the number of CLP-related appointments performed annually at the institution. The results revealed a higher prevalence of male patients, with a predominance of individuals aged 0 to 10 years. The study concludes that identifying the patient profile is essential for guiding public health interventions, facilitating the planning of more effective healthcare policies, and expanding access to specialized care. Additionally, the study underscores the importance of interdisciplinary strategies that integrate various fields of health, education, and social assistance to promote inclusion and improve the quality of life for individuals with cleft lip and palate.
