INTEGRATING NURSES INTO THE CARE OF CRITICALLY ILL PATIENTS

Abstract

Introduction: In view of both professional satisfaction and the quality of care provided to critically ill patients and their safety, it is imperative to invest in structured integration processes to acquire the skills required of nurses. From the perspective of both the integrated nurse and the nurse who integrates, there are numerous factors that influence this process and which must be taken into account. Objective: Identify the factors that influence the effectiveness of the process of integrating nurses into the care of critically ill patients. Methodology: Systematic literature review according to the Joanna Briggs Institute [JBI] methodology, using the PICO mnemonic to formulate the research question. Through the B-On platform, the following were applied as search limiters: full text and bibliographic references available, peer-reviewed, published in academic journals, in portuguese and english and between 2019 and 2024. Results: 5 primary study articles were obtained, of a qualitative nature, which identify the factors that influence the process of integrating nurses into the provision of care for the critically ill. Conclusion: The integration process should be individualized and preferably led by a nurse who is an expert in the field, available and who values communication between those involved. The interpersonal relationship established between the nurse who is integrated and the one who integrates is one of the most important aspects for the effectiveness of this process.
