USE OF GREEN ROOFS AS A SUSTAINABLE STRATEGY FOR CONSTRUCTIONS

Abstract

The use of green roofs, or ecological roofs, has become an innovative sustainable solution in the field of civil construction, promoting environmental, thermal and aesthetic benefits. These roofing systems use vegetation as the main element, transforming underused areas into spaces that help mitigate urban heat islands, manage rainwater and provide thermal and acoustic insulation for buildings. The integration of these roofs is especially relevant in dense urban environments, contributing to biodiversity and ecological efficiency. Therefore, this article highlights the viability and long-term impacts of green roofs, with emphasis on the comparison between extensive and intensive systems, in addition to their hydrological and thermal benefits. Furthermore, costs and execution times are analyzed in relation to conventional roofing systems. Therefore, despite higher initial costs, green roofs offer long-term economic and environmental advantages, promoting sustainability in the construction sector and contributing to the reintroduction of green areas in cities.
