EFFICACY AND VACCINATION STRATEGIES AGAINST VARICELLA-ZOSTER VIRUS: COMPLICATIONS AND PERSPECTIVES

Abstract

This study investigated the complications caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV) and the efficacy of vaccines in preventing infection. Herpes zoster, one of the most severe forms of VZV reactivation, causes neurological complications and debilitating pain, particularly in the elderly. Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a common complication, affecting patients' quality of life. The study highlighted the efficacy of attenuated and recombinant vaccines, with the recombinant vaccine being more effective in the elderly and immunocompromised individuals. Vaccine co-administration and the use of booster doses are promising strategies to improve vaccine coverage and prevent outbreaks. Even in vaccinated populations, VZV continues to circulate, indicating the need for continuous monitoring and adjustments to vaccination policies. This study reinforces the importance of vaccination to control VZV spread and reduce severe complications.
