UPPER DIGESTIVE ENDOSCOPY: MAIN INDICATIONS

Abstract

This literature review gathered articles published preferably in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese in the last five years in the PUBMED and SciELO databases, aiming to review the main indications for performing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is an indispensable tool in clinical practice, with a wide range of indications ranging from the diagnosis and monitoring of benign conditions to the detection and treatment of potentially fatal diseases. The decision to perform an EGD should always be based on a careful clinical evaluation, considering the benefits and risks of the procedure. In addition, it is important to consider the individualization of care, where the patient's clinical history, the presence of comorbidities, and the response to previous treatments are essential factors in determining the need for an EGD. Advances in endoscopic techniques have also expanded the indications for the procedure, allowing the performance of minimally invasive therapeutic interventions, which previously would have required open surgery. The judicious use of EGD contributes to a more effective management of gastrointestinal diseases, improving clinical outcomes and the quality of life of patients. Therefore, understanding the indications and correctly applying this procedure are fundamental skills.
