BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL ASPECTS OF THE MEDICAL EXAMINER: LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this narrative review is to evaluate the biopsychosocial aspects involved in the occupation of coroners, as well as the possible consequences arising from such a role and possible forms of intervention Bibliographical Review: Contact with death and/or situations of extreme vulnerability, generates emotional exhaustion in the forensic medical professional, contributing to the development of defense mechanisms. Involvement with the victim's family is the main source for the occurrence of anxious conditions and psychological exhaustion, also generating PTSD and depression. Professionals do not receive adequate mental preparation, presenting difficulty in separating and organizing perceptions of interactions with family members in relation to their own affective and cognitive reactions. Working conditions and organization, unhealthy conditions and the pejorative imagery of the media contribute to a negative view and stigmatization of the profession that have repercussions on its psychological structure Final considerations: The role of the coroner impacts on social interactions and direct and indirect relationships with victims, developing psychic pathologies. As a way to reduce the burden of stress and negative feelings, recovery strategies such as psychoeducation have been presented.
