QUALITY OF LIFE OF WOMEN WITH BREAST RECONSTRUCTION AFTER MASTECTOMY: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Introduction: Cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of death worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a significant increase in cancer deaths is projected, with a 45% growth expected between 2007 and 2030, raising the annual number of deaths from 7.9 million to 11.5 million. Objective: To evaluate the quality of life of women who have undergone breast reconstruction after mastectomy, exploring the physical, psychological, and social impacts of this surgical intervention. Methodology: For the research construction, data collection and analysis were conducted through the databases Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), and Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde do Ministério da Saúde (BVS) – using the following Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS). Results and Discussion: With advancements in surgical techniques, immediate breast reconstruction (when indicated) after mastectomy is currently feasible, resulting in benefits for the mental and physical health of the patient, without compromising the effectiveness of oncological treatment. Conclusion: In conclusion, breast reconstruction after mastectomy plays a crucial role in improving the quality of life of women facing breast cancer. This intervention not only aims to restore the patient's physical integrity but also has a significant impact on their psychological and emotional well-being. The recovery of the lost body image due to mastectomy is fundamental for the self-esteem and self-confidence of women, enabling them to face the emotional challenges associated with breast cancer treatment.
