Abstract

The article "Self-medication with Antibiotics and the Repercussions on Bacterial Resistance" addresses a topic of increasing importance in the area of public health. The practice of self-medication with antibiotics has become a global concern due to its impact on bacterial resistance, a phenomenon that threatens the effectiveness of antimicrobial treatments. Bacterial resistance arises as a result of inappropriate and indiscriminate use of antibiotics, often perpetuated by self-medication. The study examines the underlying causes of self-medication, including seeking prompt treatment, affordability and easy access to medication. It explores how this practice contributes to the accelerated spread of resistant bacteria, leading to intractable infections, increased health costs and therapeutic limitations. The direct relationship between self-medication and bacterial resistance is elucidated, highlighting how bacteria can adapt and evolve to survive drugs. The fundamental role of awareness and education is highlighted as a crucial strategy to face this problem. Public awareness campaigns, educational programs in schools and the active participation of health professionals emerge as essential approaches to promoting the responsible use of antibiotics. In addition, the need for multisectoral partnerships and effective public health policies is emphasized in order to contain the spread of bacterial resistance. Ultimately, the article underscores the urgency of addressing self-medication with antibiotics as a collective issue. The impact on public and individual health is evident, and only through coordinated actions and widespread education will it be possible to mitigate the adverse effects of self-medication. Raising awareness of the associated risks and promoting the appropriate use of antibiotics becomes essential to ensure the continued effectiveness of these vital drugs in treating infections.
