Abstract

Rehabilitating severely atrophic jaws is a challenge for professional dentists, one option is reconstruction with bone grafts for a subsequent protocol with osseointegrated implants and implant-supported prostheses. However, the need for donor areas, or even a bone bank, several surgical times, and a long treatment period have been an obstacle. In this sense, a therapeutic resource that has gained notoriety and space is the zygomatic implants (ZIs). These, in turn, eliminate the need for grafting and allow immediate loading. The objective of this current literature review was to approach rehabilitation with zygomatic anchorage, to understand the advantages and disadvantages of this type of implant, indications, contraindications, complications and the surgical techniques most used in therapy. Scientific articles, books and theses published between (2015-2022) in English and Portuguese were selected, consulted in the databases: SciELO, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, PubMed and Google Scholar. The Zis, when associated with a correct indication, have shown excellent results in the intervention of the maxilla with severe bone resorption, with very high success rates.
