This article is based on a Psychology course project developed in response to the rising number of autism spectrum disorder diagnoses. The primary objective was to understand not only autism itself but also the impact of early diagnosis on the disorder's treatment and prognosis. A narrative review methodology was employed; the study relied on existing literature regarding the subject, obviating the need for field research, given the wealth of available material. Results from this review indicate that early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, currently defined as diagnosis made by the age of four, can be beneficial when followed by access to high-quality, multidisciplinary therapeutic treatments and interventions tailored to the individual's needs. Furthermore, the negative consequences associated with delayed diagnosis underscore the importance of identifying the condition during the first years of life. Finally, the study highlights the need to develop diagnostic tools that are more sensitive to the early signs of autism.
