This study aimed to analyze the contribution of physical therapy to improving the quality of life of older adults, focusing on mobility, balance, and functional independence. This is an integrative, descriptive-exploratory literature review conducted in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) between February and August 2025. Studies published in Portuguese between 2015 and 2025 that addressed the proposed topic were included. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 17 articles comprised the final sample. The results demonstrated that physical therapy plays an essential role in the prevention and rehabilitation of changes resulting from aging, contributing to the preservation of overall functionality. Strategies such as muscle strengthening, balance training, hydrotherapy, Tai Chi, and environmental adaptations have proven effective in reducing the risk of falls and promoting active aging. It is concluded that physiotherapy is an indispensable tool for the health of the elderly and should be integrated into public policies and interdisciplinary care practices to ensure greater autonomy, well-being, and quality of life.
