This article discusses the causes of school dropout in EJA (Youth and Adult Education) from a historical perspective. The history of this educational modality provides opportunities for those who were unable to study when they were younger. In this context, the main objective was to demonstrate the importance of EJA for potential professional development and improved life expectancy by analyzing the causes of dropout in EJA, listing the reasons why students in this educational modality drop out of school and the challenges of returning to school. Methodologically, a bibliographical research was conducted, proposing to discuss relevant issues related to the specificities of EJA. It is considered important that public policies exist aimed at ensuring the retention of this population in school and that teaching methods and strategies meet their expectations, providing opportunities for emancipation in the society in which they live.
