Abstract

Introduction: Late motherhood has become increasingly common, requiring obstetric care to adopt approaches tailored to the specific needs of women over 40. In the postpartum period, these women face greater physical, emotional, and social risks, demanding comprehensive and humanized care. Objective: To investigate the challenges and needs of the postpartum period in women over the age of 40, analyzing the contribution of obstetric nursing to provide humanized and effective care. Methodology: This is a qualitative bibliographic review based on publications from 2018 to 2022. Databases such as BVS, LILACS, MEDLINE, and BDENF were used, with descriptors related to the postpartum period and advanced maternal age. Results and Discussion: The main challenges identified include a higher risk of hypertension, infections, hypogalactia, and emotional disorders. Obstetric nursing plays a key role in prevention, early detection, and the implementation of care practices that promote safety and empathy. The absence of specific protocols and weak psychosocial support remain barriers to adequate care. Conclusion: Health services must update their protocols and invest in the continuous training of obstetric nursing professionals, considering the specificities of motherhood after 40. Strengthening multidisciplinary care and focusing on humanization are essential for ensuring a safer and more respectful postpartum experience.
