This article aimed to identify and discuss the main challenges faced by nursing professionals in the reception, care, and management of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This is a narrative literature review employing a descriptive-exploratory method, conducted through the careful selection of articles published between 2018 and 2024, freely available in the Virtual Health Library (VHL). Studies that directly addressed the role of nursing in the context of childhood autism were included. The main findings showed that nursing professionals face difficulties related to effective communication with children, managing sensory and behavioral crises, and lack of specialized training and continuous education. It concludes that nursing requires ongoing investment in academic education and specialized practical training to provide qualified, comprehensive, and humane care to autistic children and their families.
