Abstract

Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by difficulty with spoken language and social interaction. The oral condition of the patient with ASD is of high levels of dental plaque, explained by the difficulties in performing oral hygiene, also increasing the rates of caries and periodontal disease. This shows the importance of effective dental treatment, but it is one of the biggest challenges for dentists, due to its complex and varied clinical manifestations. The objective of this study is to emphasize the importance of an effective and safe approach by the dentist, to obtain the collaboration of the patient with ASD during non-pharmacological dental care. The study consists of a narrative literature review, and searches were carried out in bibliographic databases; Pubmed, BVS (Virtual Health Library) and Lilacs (Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences) from 2012 to 2021. With the results, it was observed that, in order to provide good care, it is initially necessary to getting the patient's cooperation, with educational and playful methods and techniques, teaching and encouraging them to practice their oral hygiene, always emphasizing prevention. Thus, it is possible to conclude that it is important to carry out dental care early, from early childhood for a better adaptation by the autistic patient and thus greater cooperation will be obtained in maintaining their oral health within their limitations.
