THE GYNECOLOGICAL COMPLICATIONS OF ENDOMETRIOSIS AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS ON THE QUALITY OF PATIENTS’ MENTAL HEALTH

Abstract

Endometriosis, a chronic gynecological condition characterized by the abnormal growth of endometrium-like tissue outside the uterus, has been associated with significant complications that transcend the physical domain, influencing patients' mental health. The intersection between the gynecological complications of endometriosis and its impacts on mental health highlights the complexity of this condition, addressing issues such as chronic pain, infertility and emotional challenges. Understanding the psychosocial implications is crucial for a holistic and effective approach to managing endometriosis. Objective: This study seeks to carry out a systematic review of recent literature to analyze the gynecological complications of endometriosis and their relationship with patients' mental health. The aim is to identify patterns, gaps and trends in research, providing a comprehensive synthesis of available evidence. Methodology: The methodology followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. The databases used were PubMed, Scielo and Web of Science. Five main descriptors were used: endometriosis, gynecological complications, mental health, psychosocial impact and quality of life. Inclusion criteria involved studies published in the last 10 years, focused on patients with endometriosis, gynecological complications and mental health. Exclusion criteria included studies with heterogeneous samples, lack of relevant data and inadequate methods. Results: Analysis of the articles revealed a significant association between gynecological complications of endometriosis and adverse impacts on patients' mental health. Recurring themes included the influence of chronic pain on emotional quality of life and the relationship between infertility due to endometriosis and psychological well-being. Conclusion: This systematic review highlights the importance of considering not only the physical but also the psychosocial aspects of endometriosis. A comprehensive understanding of these complications can inform more effective treatment strategies aimed at improving patients' overall quality of life.
