Abstract

Cockfighting is a cruel practice involving confrontation between roosters trained to fight to the death. This activity results in serious mistreatment of animals, causing physical injuries and psychological damage. In addition, cockfights are associated with criminal activities, such as illegal betting and involvement in drug and weapons trafficking. These practices have negative impacts both on the animals involved and on society in general. Roosters suffer significant physical and psychological damage, compromising their well-being. Rural communities, where cockfighting is most common, face ethical and economic challenges related to this illegal practice. Public awareness plays a key role in the fight against cockfighting and animal abuse. Combat strategies include the implementation of stricter laws, the creation of specialized units to combat crimes against animals and educational campaigns. Non-governmental organizations play an important role in raising awareness and rescuing animals involved in fighting. The cultural and historical comparison reveals the influence of the cultural context on the prevalence of cockfighting, highlighting the importance of addressing this issue taking cultural particularities into account. Social changes and alternative approaches have emerged to combat cockfighting, valuing the preservation of rooster breeds and promoting healthy competition without resorting to violence. To effectively combat cockfighting and animal abuse, it is essential to promote a culture of respect for animals, strengthen animal protection laws and policies, and encourage alternative approaches that value the preservation of species and animal welfare. Only then can we build a more ethical and compassionate society towards all living beings.
