The objective of this work is to demonstrate, through a current literature review, the main causes of Temporomandibular Disorders, diagnosis, prevalence, associated symptoms, recent treatments and relation to orofacial pain. This is a descriptive study, conducted by a literature review based on previously published works, such as scientific articles, theses and monographs. All the works present in this work were filed and carefully analyzed, using as a database: Google Scholar, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) and National Institute of Health (PUBMED). The following descriptors were used in the databases: “temporomandibular joint” “dysfunction syndrome”, “orofacial pain” in English and Portuguese. authors consider the multifactorial etiology for the problem and that the treatment should be based on a multidisciplinary team. It is important for the professional to make a good diagnosis and consider the associated use of adjuvant agents with other therapies to combat symptoms, reduce pain and restore normal functions of the stomatognathic system.
