This article aims to analyze the legal consequences of the oil spill in the Brazilian sea based on the Bouboulina case, identifying how international environmental law deals with the matter. Its hypothesis is as follows: the responsibility for oil spills in high seas (international waters) that cause significant contamination of the Brazilian coast is international. In this sense, its specific objectives were: to discuss international environmental law; to highlight the environmental impacts caused by the disaster; to identify international environmental norms applicable to the case; and to suggest possible solutions to be adopted. This study sought to gather information pertinent to the theme through a survey of theoretical references already analyzed and published in electronic and written form, on the theory that guided the scientific work, in such a way as to make it possible to systematize all the material analyzed. Thus, it was concluded that the international treaties cited in the text have a very close relationship with international environmental law since they define some concepts and regulate issues involving environmental damage by offshore oil spills.
