Abstract

In 2019, in the city of Wuhan, China, a new virus called SARS-CoV-2 emerged, which is highly transmissible and has rapidly spread throughout all countries, thus characterizing a pandemic. Viral infection presents itself in various forms, from asymptomatic to more severe forms leading to death. Among several studies, it is known that there is already evidence of some hematological changes useful to predict a critical prognosis, which is the objective of this study, which was based on a work with a quantitative approach, observational, exploratory and descriptive using blood count reports of patients who were hospitalized with COVID-19 at Hospital Maicé de Caçador/SC. Patients aged between 21 and 99 years old of both genders, who presented severe disease and who required admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) were selected. In the data compared by statistical analysis, no significant changes were found in the hematological parameters, however, descriptively, there was a difference between the hematological parameters of patients who were discharged due to an improvement in those who died, since extremely severe patients who evolved negatively had a greater amount of leukocytes and a low lymphocyte count, thus characterizing an imbalance in the immune system, consequently a poor prognosis. Thus, the hematological changes observed in the blood count are important for the medical team to be able to determine whether the patient is at risk or not, thus determining strategies for it.
