The present work highlights the importance of knowing the ways of discarding garbage, within the school and in the community where they live, aiming at the implementation of sustainable practices. It seeks to integrate students and the community in order to sensitize them to the practices of waste disposal, preservation of the environment and reuse of materials that have been discarded in the trash. These activities provided students with awareness of the importance of the environment and the reuse that would be discarded in the trash. The methodology adopted was by means of an initial visit to the Municipal Department of the Environment to verify the policy of waste management in the rural area of the municipality and the application of a questionnaire open to residents of the community of São José da Serra popularly known as Vila Matão and questionnaire Closed to students from the 6th to 9th grade of the Constâncio Leite de Moraes Municipal School. A visit was also made at the Basic Family Health Unit located in the community and at the time an interview with the nurse in charge of how the management and disposal of the garbage produced in the unit is carried out. The implementation of an environmental education policy aimed at guiding residents about sustainable consumption, the practice of separating waste with recycling potential or local composting is the first step to ensure environmental sustainability and higher quality of life for residents of the São José da Serra, because it will allow the reduction of waste to be discarded in the community soil and may even provide a source of complementary income for the residents.
