The primary dentition performs mastication, phonation, swallowing and aesthetic functions. In addition, these teeth are responsible for maintaining spaces for permanent teeth. In this way, primary teeth avoid problems such as decreased arch perimeter, tooth migration and loss of space. For this reason, the loss of these teeth can cause a change in the child's occlusion. Therefore, the objective of this study was to carry out a Narrative Literature Review in order to discuss the early loss of deciduous teeth, highlighting its etiology, possible consequences and therapeutic options. The loss of a deciduous tooth is considered early or premature when it occurs at least one year before its normal exfoliation or after radiographic evidence that the permanent successor is still below Nolla stage six, that is, with coronal formation. complete and root formation has already begun. Its main etiological factors are: dental caries, inadequate restorations, ankylosis, trauma, developmental anomalies and early resorption of the roots of deciduous teeth. The most ideal treatment is the space-maintaining appliance. Your choice is based on the child's individual needs, as well as their age and the patient's degree of cooperation. With the present work, it can be concluded that educational and preventive practices and methods must be employed so that the early loss of deciduous teeth is reduced and, if it happens, space maintainers must be installed to prevent possible unfavorable consequences.
