Considering the dental elements, some basic principles such as color, shape, size, texture and brightness are fundamental for the composition of a harmonious smile. Currently, patients seek the professional in order to perform bleaching procedures to obtain aesthetic results. Tooth whitening is considered a less invasive and more conservative procedure. In view of this, this study aims to review the effects of the technique on tooth sensitivity after treatment in the literature. The methods to carry out this work were through a literature search on the subject of sensitivity after tooth whitening. In view of this, scientific articles indexed in PubMed and SciELO databases were selected. The literature describes that to indicate a whitening dentist, it is necessary to start with a detailed diagnosis of each patient, identifying the causes of their color changes, that is, if this process is extrinsic or intrinsic. Studies report that the reactions may not only affect pigmented molecules, where there may be a reaction with other structures. They also write that the main adverse effects caused are related to pain, hypersensitivity, irritation and gingival inflammation, pulp inflammation, toxicity, pH alteration and external resorption. Therefore, it is concluded that, even with some adversity, this treatment is viable if well indicated and administered correctly, as adverse effects can be minimized or even controlled.
