Cancer is a public health issue, especially when taking into account its prevention percentage: about one third of new cancer cases in the world could be avoided. Cancer is currently a public health problem and cancer care is among the most expensive in the social sphere. To change this scenario, it is essential to encourage the search for accurate information on the incidence in the population, enabling the implementation of public policies aimed at reducing damage, expenses and mortality rates. This article consisted of a narrative literature review based on research carried out and published in the last ten years on the importance of pharmaceutical care aimed at the rational use of medicines. And after the review, it was seen that the practice of care as a guidance tool in promoting the rational use of medicines becomes extremely relevant to prevent and reduce many of the problems related to therapeutic adherence. Because a pharmaceutical care that is well managed and used by the pharmaceutical professional through simple and targeted strategies makes it possible to dispense, promote and educate the patient or the community about the safe use of medicines during treatment, it sought to relate the importance of pharmaceutical care as an instrument of guidance on the rational use of medicines and the role of the pharmacist in health care.
