The evolution and development of humanity has been accompanied by the use of renewable energy sources. In view of this, the burning of fossil fuels represents a major setback, as it is the main source of environmental impacts causing aggravation of the greenhouse effect, melting of polar ice caps, air pollution, seas and rivers, among others; and has its finite resources. The indispensability of environmental preservation generates the need to produce clean energy that causes the least possible impact and one of the solutions to this issue is the use of energy generated through sunlight, using photovoltaic cells composed of silicon, an abundant material on the planet. This article aims to analyze and discuss how the use of photovoltaic panels influences the search for sustainability as a source of renewable energy, expanding knowledge on the subject, and disseminating studies and aspects related to this solar generator, whose use can be directed both for both residential and industrial use. The methodology chosen was the bibliographic review with a search in renowned academic sources on Google Scholar and SciELO.
