Abstract

The pharmacist is the professional responsible for the release and guidance on the rational use of medicines, in this case MIPs (over-the-counter medicines), through pharmaceutical care, as these are related to low-severity diseases, so their use is considered short term (or in acute cases). Thus, the act of self-medicating is a behavior harmful to health. Due to the population being unaware of the possible risks of inappropriate and indiscriminate use of medicines for health, it has increasingly been adept at the use of over-the-counter drugs seeking relief from the disease. However, they must be used with caution and their dispensation must be accompanied by a qualified professional, as these drugs can cause damage to health due to improper use. Therefore, the role of the pharmacist is relevant against self-medication related to PIMs due to the importance of correct guidance regarding the use of drugs to promote health and the well-being of the patient with rational pharmacotherapy.
