The teaching of Mathematics has broad challenges in promoting teaching strategies that provide stimuli and interest to students in relation to mathematical knowledge and its applications. In this context, the teaching of Mathematics demands that students have the ability to interpret textual, which allows them to develop reflection and criticality on the text, to identify the necessary mathematical applications. The general objective of this study is to discuss the importance of the literacy process for the development of Mathematics teaching in basic education. This study is characterized as a bibliographic research. The development of this study is relevant to understand the educational process in basic education, from the literacy and literacy process built in the teaching-learning process of the initial grades of elementary school. The importance of the literacy and literacy process in the teaching of mathematics in basic education consists in providing essential bases for working on the critical dimension of mathematical knowledge in the classroom.
