The need to adopt emergency remote teaching to guarantee the continuity of teaching activities led instructores, students and their families to face many new challenges. Thus, this research aimed to present and discuss generally the new challenges faced by teachers in the pandemic scenario and their implications for education, and more specifically to analyze how this process took place in a state school from Maranhão, in the municipality of São Luís. The main difficulties pointed out by the teachers in remote education were mainly related to the lack of training to work in this teaching modality, work overload and problems in students' learning, as they were also unable to use the new study tools and many were unmotivated. As for the provision of technological resources for remote teaching, chips for internet access were distributed by the state government to all students and teachers in the network, which facilitated access to remote classes. And in this new scenario, teachers had to develop new strategies for their teaching practice, and the main difficulties heard in relation to students were related to problems accessing the internet, lack of cell phone or computer, as well as the lack of interaction with classmate and classroom teachers. It was found out that several issues were discussed, such as the use of technologies as allies of school education, inequalities in access to digital technologies, the importance and appreciation of the teacher and the participation of families in the teaching process.
